How to Increase Audio Volume Online (Without Distortion)

There is nothing worse than recording a great interview only to realize the audio levels are barely audible. In the past, fixing this meant expensive software and risk of "clipping" (distortion).

Today, you can boost volume intelligently using our online Volume Adjuster. Here is how to do it properly.

Understanding Digital Volume

Digital audio has a "ceiling" called 0dB. If you push the volume past this limit, the tops of the waveforms get chopped off, resulting in harsh, crackling static known as distortion.

Our tool analyzes your file and applies normalization—raising the loudest peak to just below 0dB—or allows you to carefully apply gain beyond that if needed.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Analyze Your File

Upload your quiet track to the Volume Tool. Listen to it. Is the whole track quiet, or just one person?

Step 2: Apply Boost

Use the slider to increase gain:

  • 100% (Original): No change.
  • 150% (Mild Boost): Good for slightly quiet recordings.
  • 200% (Double Volume): Use with caution.
  • 300% (Maximum): Only for extremely faint audio. Expect some background noise to increase too.

Step 3: Check for Distortion

Preview the result. If you hear crackling, lower the boost. It is better to have slightly quiet audio than distorted audio.

Step 4: Download

Save your boosted file. We recommend WAV format to prevent further quality loss from re-compression.

Pro Tip: Remove Background Noise First

When you boost volume, you also boost background hiss (air conditioner, computer fans). If possible, use a noise reduction tool before boosting volume for the cleanest result.
